Griffith Park Carousel Los Angeles, CA July 30, 2009
|

It's been quite a few years since I visited the carousel at Griffith Park it was in the
process of being restored, or at least repainted. Well, that project is still in progress,
or a new project has started. All of the animals showed a lot of wear with a lot of
chips in the paint. The chariots, rounding boards and other scenery are in
comparable condition. The building seemed to be holding up well. Some of the
rounding boards were in various stages of being refinished and repainted (as you'll
see in the photos). It's really a shame to see this carousel in such a state.
Aside from the fact that this carousel shows a lot of wear, it seems to be in good
operational condition.
I remember when the fires were in the hills around Griffith Park and the carousel
was in danger of burning. When the fires were extinguished, I felt obligated to call,
and was pleased to learn that the carousel was still standing, and hope it will remain
so for many decades to come.

As you can see from the photos below, the restoration is certainly in progress. It
appears the first photo is cleaned and sanded and ready to be painted. The top right
photo has the scenery and some of the border painted. The photo below that and to
the left is more complete, followed by the bottom-right photo that shows a completed
panel.
The bottom two photos are of the chariots. As you can see, they, too, are being
restored. I live close enough that I can put this in my plans next year to pay them
another visit, and hopefully see the finished product.
